Majorcan markets
The Balearic island of Majorca is located in the Mediterranean Sea. Its name comes from its being the larger of its neighbouring island, appropriately named Minorca. Its culture is a colourful and celebratory one, making it a really special place to spend a holiday. One such example of its vibrant culture is its markets, where you can find just about anything to buy. This article is a brief look at the markets of Majorca.
Every single day of the week there is a market you can go to in Majorca, usually running from around 9 or 10 in the morning, to early afternoon, around 2. To mention just a few of the things you will be able to find in a Majorcan market, there are shoes, leathers, belts bags and other clothes, ceramic and decorative pots and dishes. It is good to just arrive with no clear idea of what you want to buy, and just leisurely browse for that ultimate bargain.
For each season on Majorca there will be a different set of fruits and vegetables available from these markets. If all you really want is the food, then a great option is to go in orange season, for the oranges on Majorca are supposed to be divine. If you want something traditional then the agricultural and livestock market at Sineu is right up your alley.
For those markets that are the biggest, and have the most variation on offer, the best place to go is Inca, where on a Thursday you will find the biggest market on the island. The Sunday Market found in Santa Maria is also an excellent option as it literally sells anything you can think of. Bear in mind that most of the items will be fixed price, but there is usually room for haggling if something seems a little too dear.
Visiting the markets in another country is more than just a fun day out and a way to get away with cheap items; it also has symbolic value. It lets the locals know that you are trying to experience their everyday life, and they will appreciate this, even if your Spanish is terrible!
