Lanzarote camping
Lanzarote is a beautiful little Spanish island in the Atlantic Ocean just to the north west of Africa. It is the fourth largest of the volcanic archipelago known as the Canary Islands. With its glorious all year round sunshine, crystal clear seas, and magnificent beaches, it is the perfect place for a holiday. The weather is also perfect for camping, and there are some really fun options if you are the outdoorsy type.
There are three “official” places you can camp on the island, and they are all subsidised by the ayuntamientos so are completely free. One such place is the Famara San Juan Beach campsite, which is situated on the very end of the beach as you come into the town. This place is a very well maintained campsite, and there are some really helpful members of staff on hand to help you pitch etc. There is also the obvious benefit of being on the beach. But there is only a single public toilet, and a single cold public shower.
Another option is the Papayagayo Beach campsite in Playa Blanca. This is another beach campsite that is very well maintained, and is actually the largest campsite on Lanzarote. There you will find a decent amount of toilets and private showers.
La Graciosa is the last campsite to mention, which is a stunning spot. Again, it is situated on a beach, and there are really high quality facilities. It is the remoteness of it, however, that makes it such a great place to camp. It is so remote because it is actually on a tiny island just off the northernmost point of Lanzarote; being there, you will not hear, or care, about what is happening on the rest of the planet.
There are also plenty of “unofficial” places to camp on the island, and despite the “no camping” signs found on the beaches of Arrieta and Orzola, nobody seems to mind the people who do camp there. This is a good place to go if the official spots fill up. A full, bustling Spanish campsite is noisy and not the best environment for sleep or relaxation.
